Mule: Simplifying Mobile Investing for Everyday Users

Mule is a mobile stock investment app designed to make investing simple and accessible for everyday users. The app allows users to discover stocks, track their portfolio performance, buy and sell assets, and manage their wallet all in one place.

Many stock investment apps are designed with too much complexity, making them difficult for everyday users to navigate confidently. Instead of feeling guided, users often feel overwhelmed by financial data, unclear navigation, and transaction flows that do not provide enough reassurance. This becomes even more critical when users need to carry out sensitive actions such as funding their wallet or withdrawing money, where confusion can lead to hesitation, mistakes, or loss of trust.

In this project, the problem I aimed to solve was how to design a stock app that makes portfolio tracking, stock browsing, wallet funding, and withdrawals feel simple, secure, and easy to understand. The challenge was to create an experience that reduces friction for beginners while still being efficient for returning users, ensuring that financial actions feel transparent and trustworthy at every step.

To better understand the challenges users face when using stock investment apps, I conducted exploratory UX research focused on how people navigate these platforms and where friction commonly occurs. I began by reviewing patterns across existing stock and fintech products to identify recurring usability issues, including overloaded interfaces, unclear navigation, and transaction flows that can feel stressful or uncertain. This helped me define the main pain points and uncover opportunities to create a simpler, more trustworthy experience.

As part of this process, I reviewed competitor platforms including Bamboo, Afrinvest, and Public.

Studying these apps helped me understand how existing platforms approach portfolio tracking, stock discovery, wallet functions, and financial transactions.

These research insights were then translated into key design priorities: improving clarity, reducing complexity, using familiar interaction patterns, and building guided transaction flows that make users feel more secure and in control. Together, these findings shaped the overall structure, navigation, and visual direction of the app.

The opportunity was to design a stock app that does not just offer investment features, but presents them in a way that feels clear, steady, and dependable. Many existing platforms are feature rich, yet they often overwhelm users with dense interfaces and transaction journeys that feel uncertain at critical moments. This project responded to that gap by creating a mobile experience centred on clarity of information, ease of movement, and confidence during sensitive financial actions.

The solution focused on simplifying the most important user journeys, from portfolio tracking and stock browsing to wallet funding and withdrawals. Through tighter information hierarchy, cleaner navigation, and more deliberate transaction steps, the design reduces ambiguity and helps users feel in control. The result is an experience that makes investing feel less intimidating, more transparent, and better suited to everyday mobile users.

Mule showed how simplifying complex financial actions can make investing feel more approachable for users. By focusing on clear navigation, simple steps, and familiar interaction patterns, the design helps users understand their portfolio, explore stocks, and manage money with more confidence.

A key learning from this process was the importance of clarity in financial products. Small design choices, such as guided flows and clear feedback, can greatly improve user trust and reduce confusion when users perform sensitive actions like buying stocks or moving money.
